Preparing to Soar the Skies
Misty swept through her closet. One after another she rejected a black/brown steampunk dress or black/brown steampunk jacket. Since she’d be soaring the skies in an airship, she needed something a bit more modest. Finally, she settled on a black steampunk coat and black steampunk pants. She got dressed and completed her outfit with steampunk accessories.
“Wow, look at that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Outfit,” said her friend Violet. It makes me want to change out of my Adjustable Straps Natural Waist Steampunk Dress.”
“Oh no, we’re running late,” said Misty, checking her watch. “It’s time to go.” She tossed the last of her steampunk outfits in her luggage and snapped it shut.
Violet was already halfway out the door. “Hurry!” she called out. “If we miss the airship then we’ll have to wait another week before seeing Gran.”
Misty followed her outside. Waiting for them was a horse and buggy that would take them to the airship field. They hopped in, while the driver stowed their luggage in the back. Soon they were on their way to the airship field.
As they drove past another buggy, the passenger called out to them, “Hello ladies, be careful in the skies!”
They waved back at him. Soon their driver had them at the field. They disembarked and made ticket arrangements. Soon they were walking to their airship.
“Welcome, ladies,” said the Captain, examining and stamping their tickets. “We’ll be in the air in a moment. I’m just waiting for Christopher. If he doesn’t show in five, then we shall take off without him.”
“Thank you, Captain,” said Misty. “Come along Violet, let’s get the good seats.” She carefully stepped up the small wooden steps to the airship.
The ship was small but majestic. The airship had a large oval brown balloon and supported a small woven wicker basket where the passengers sat. There was only enough space for six people, plus the Captain, and a few items of luggage.
“Oof,” said Misty, “I should have packed lighter. But I did want to wear my Black Sleeveless Halter Gown for dinner tonight.”
“I should have left behind my Black Punk Crucifix Adornment Lolita Boots, but I really wanted something special to wear tonight too,” explained Violet.
“Oh, who is that?” asked Misty, watching a scruffy man enter the basket.
“Don’t know, but he looks like a pirate or something,” said Violet, laughing.
The man tipped his hat at the ladies before sitting down.
The Captain entered the basket and then closed the small gate. “Welcome, everyone. We shall commence our flight in a few moments. Thank you for flying on the Intrepid Airship.”
“Will it only be us today, Captain?” asked Misty.
“It’s a light load,” commented Violet.
“Why yes, since it’s a holiday, everyone is off doing stuff. But that doesn’t matter. As long as I have one passenger, the Intrepid flies!”
The Captain prepared the ship for its flight. He released the ropes that held the ship steady. He opened the hydrogen tank so the air would inflate the balloon above them. It grew larger and more impressive. Soon the gas lifted them into the air.
The ladies read their books and occasionally peered over the edge when the Captain called out an attraction. They were a couple hours into their flight when suddenly a strange noise was heard from overhead.
“Why, hello,” called out a man. He was dangling from a rope stepladder at the front of the basket.
“Sir, I insist that you leave immediately,” called out the Captain, taking out his pistol.
