Mother shook her head. “Oh no, I can’t intrude. You know how it is. I don’t want to be the talk of the town.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Stewart,” said Mirabella, taking her dress box. “Everything is so nicely packaged up.”
“Thank you too, Mirabella.” She waved and smiled at her as she left the shop.
But Mirabella wasn’t smiling as she left the store.
Mirabella had a wonderful time at the Mayor’s tea party, but she was quiet and watched the goings-on from the sidelines. She thought about what Mrs. Stewart had told her. There was certainly a big divide between the rich, workers, tradespeople, and the poor in the town. And then she had an idea.
Later that day, Violet excitedly picked up a small white envelope from the floor. “Mother! We have mail,” she excitedly said.
“What is it dear?” answered her Mother.
“Oh! Why it’s an invitation!” Violet replied.
That’s great!I will have a party in the Victorian era! Violet thought to herself.
“Oh, that must be from Mirabella. I wish she’d stop. I’m happy hanging out with my friends and family. I don’t need to hobnob with the rich.”
“Oh, no, that’s not it,” said Violet, reading the elaborately decorated invitation inside. It had rounded edges and was embellished with gold leaf. “This is a tea party holding at her home.”
Mother shrugged.

“I haven’t seen it from the front before,” said Mother. “Usually deliveries are at the rear.”
“Hello!” said Mirabella. “I’m so glad that everyone is coming today.”
“Thank you for inviting us,” said Mother.
The tea party was a great success. Many people who’d been to both the Mayor’s and Mirabella’s event said that she gave a far better party. She was even thanked at the end of the afternoon.
“Thank you all for coming,” she said. “I wanted to hold a special inclusive event for everyone. I hope you’ve all had a great afternoon!”
The family rode back home in their carriage. “I’m so glad that I came today,” said Mother.
“Me too,” said Violet. “Everyone was beautiful.”
Mother waved her finger at her. “But don’t get too comfortable with the parties, we have a big order to work on for tomorrow.
